R- Alpha lipoic acid is produced in small amounts in the liver and other body tissue, it is a nutrient present in every cell of the body and is the naturally occurring form of lipoic acid. It is essential to chemical reactions within the body and is found within the mitochondria of cells where it metabolises glucose and directs calories into energy production.
The body produces very little Alpha Lipoic acid and it is difficult to obtain sufficient quantities through diet alone. The R form is considered the biologically active form of alpha lipic acid identical to that produced by the body.
